Creating Space for a Growing Family in Herne Hill, South London
As children grow, so do their needs. This Herne Hill family home was already rich in character and generous in size, but the existing layout no longer reflected the day-to-day realities of family life.
The brief was centred around a common challenge for growing families: creating separate spaces for each child while ensuring the home continued to function for everyone. Rather than extending or undertaking major structural works, we focused on making better use of the space already available.
The key transformation took place in the loft, where a large and underutilised guest bedroom was reimagined as two distinct zones. The space was carefully divided to create a comfortable and age-appropriate bedroom for a teenage girl, complete with ample storage and room to study, alongside a dedicated office and gym space for her father.
Elsewhere in the home, the other children’s bedrooms were thoughtfully reconfigured and redesigned to reflect their changing personalities, interests and routines. Bespoke storage solutions, improved layouts and carefully considered colour palettes helped create spaces that feel both functional and personal.
